Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin returns to Utah this weekend, this time with the Utah Symphony. He’ll play two works: Mozart’s delightful Rondo in A major, K. 386, and Richard Strauss’ demanding Burleske, a work that he’s recorded with Ilan Volkov, this weekend’s guest conductor.

Also on the program are two pieces by Béla Bartók: the Hungarian Sketches and the Concerto for Orchestra, a work that the Utah Symphony has frequently programmed.

The concerts take place Nov. 7-8 at 8 p.m. in Abravanel Hall. Tickets are $18-$69 and are available by calling 801-355-2787 or 888-451-2787 or by going online to www.utahsymphony.org. Prices increase $5 when purchased on the day of the concert.

On Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. Hamelin will participate in a free Q&A master class session facilitated by Utah Symphony principal keyboardist Jason Hardink. This will take place in the Learning Center at the Utah Opera Production Studios, 336 N. 400 West. Log on to www.usuoeducation.org/masterclass to register.

TRUMPETER ALLEN VIZZUTTI JOINS UTAH WIND SYMPHONY THURSDAY

Noted trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti is no stranger to the Utah Wind Symphony. He’s guested with the band several times, and he will once again be featured at its Nov. 6 concert.

Allen Vizzutti

Vizzutti is a well rounded musician and at home in several genres. A classically trained performer he plays both classical music and jazz, often at the same concert. He’s toured extensively in the United States and abroad and is a highly sought after soloist.

The Montana native also composes, and his works have been performed by orchestras in Los Angeles, Budapest, Nuremberg, London and elsewhere.

Thursday’s program includes Timothy Mahr’s Dig Down Deep, David Gillingham’s The Song Shall Never End and Michael Markowski’s Saturn Returns.

The concert will also feature guest conductors Russell Pesola and Craig Kirchoff as well as Churchill Junior High School band students, who will join the Utah Wind Symphony onstage for one of the works.

The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Churchill Junior High School, 3450 E. Oakview Dr., Salt Lake City. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $6 for seniors and students and available at www.utahwindsymphony.org.
