SALT LAKE CHORAL ARTISTS’ SUMMER CHORAL INSTITUTE STARTS JUNE 17

The seventh annual Summer Choral Institute, which begins June 17, is open to everyone: choral music teachers, aficionados and singers of all ages and abilities. Participants will rehearse with Salt Lake Choral Artists music director Brady Allred, and each session will culminate in a public concert. There will also be SLCA members at each session.

There will be four sessions, and each will run Thursday and Friday evenings from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2 p.m.-4 p.m., with a concert Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

There will also be a Young Choral Artists choir camp, a high school choir retreat and a conducting workshop for conductors of any level.

Below is a schedule of events. Unless otherwise noted, these events will take place in the SLCA Building.

  • June 17-22: Young Choral Artists Choir Camp – a celebration of “Beatlemania!,” the camp is for talented students and will culminate in a concert with the Summer Choral Institute Choir; there will also be a talent show, music classes and guest artists; instructors are Nancy Hopkin, Bonnie King and Tara Wardle. Sessions take place at The McGillis School, 1300 E. 668 South; the Saturday concert will be at the SLCA Building. ($105 for children in grades 3-5; 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. daily. $175 for children in grades 6-8; 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. daily.)
  • June 20-22: Session One – “Beatlemania! Music of the Beatles,” session lets participants sing their favorite Beatles songs with a live back up band. ($50, plus $20-$25 music fee.)
  • June 24-28: Conducting Workshop – lets conductors improve rehearsal technique and conducting skills; among the topics the daily classes will cover are tips for selecting choral literature, score study and preparation, dynamic phrasing, effective rehearsal techniques and beautiful singing; classes are videotaped for personal evaluation; participants will have the opportunity to conduct the class and sing in Session Two, “Choral Masterworks” for an additional music fee. ($300 plus $25 Session Two music fee for beginning to intermediate, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.; $300 plus $25 Session Two music fee for advanced class, 1 p.m.-4 p.m.)
  • June 27-29: Session Two – “Choral Masterworks: Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.” ($50, plus $20-$25 music fee.)
  • July 11-13: Session Three – “All That Jazz: Bob Chilcott’s ‘Jazz Folk Songs’ and ‘A Little Jazz Mass,’” session encompasses some of former King’s Singers Bob Chilcott’s jazz pieces for mixed choir and jazz combo, plus a setting of the familiar Mass texts with a night club flavor; the new SLCA Men’s Choir will be featured. ($50, plus $20-$25 music fee.)
  • July 18-20: Session Four – “Gospel Magnificat: Gospel Music by Robert Ray,” session features Robert Ray’s “Gospel Magnificat” and “Gospel Mass;” the SLCA Men’s Choir will also give a bon voyage performance before their tour to southern France. ($50, plus $20-$25 music fee.)
  • Aug. 14-16: High School Choir Retreat – log on to www.saltlakechoralartists.org for information.
