PROVO RESIDENT IN FINAL ROUND AT THE VAN CLIBURN AMATEUR PIANO COMPETITION

The recently completed Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which this year was for amateur pianists (those who don’t exclusively make their living as a performer), had a local connection. Provo resident Jane Gibson King was one of the six finalists at the competition, beating out a field of over 60 participants.

King had been a music student at Brigham Young University but hadn’t played the piano since the early 1980s in order to raise four children, including a son with autism. But last year she decided to enter the competition and began practicing the piano and developing her repertoire.

Although King didn’t win one of the top three prizes she did receive the Press Jury Award.

The top three spots went to Christopher Shih, a physician from Maryland; Clark Griffith, a database programmer from Texas; and Barry Coutinho, a physician from Pennsylvania.
