The final round in the Stradivarius International Violin Competition was held Saturday in Libby Gardner Concert Hall.
There were two categories: the International Junior Division and the Utah Division.
Winning top honors in the Junior Division was 14-year-old Emma Meinrenken from Canada. She received $7,500 and a violin valued at $15,000 made by Charles W. Liu, the founder and president of the Stradivarius Competition. Meinrenken will also appear with the Utah Symphony at the 2014 Deer Valley Music Festival.
Sixteen-year-old Colleen Venables, also from Canada, won second prize. She received $5,000 and a violin bow valued at $7,500 made by Lloyd Liu.
Third place was won by the 16-year-old American Gallia Kastner. She took home $3,000 in prize money.
Fourth and fifth place winners were also Americans. Seventeen-year-old Annelle Gregory received $2,000 for her fourth place win, and 16-year-old Felicity James took fifth place and won $1,000.
In the Utah Division, 15-year-old Shenae Anderson from Draper won first place. She took home $750 and will solo with the Salt Lake Symphony.
Second place was won by 15-year-old Margaret Ivory Oliverson from Holladay. She won $500.
Karen Ferry, 13, from Corinne, walked away with a third prize win and $400.
Fourth prize went to Suni Norman, 16, from Tooele. She won $400.
Fifth place was taken by 16-year-old Bree Fotheringham from Layton. She won $200.
The Stradivarius Competition is sponsored by Charles W. Liu Fine Violins and is held every three years. Previous competitions were held in 2007 and 2010.
