UTAH OPERA ANNOUNCES 2013-14 SEASON

Christopher McBeth, artistic director of Utah Opera, has announced the line up for the 2013-14 season.

The new season, which will mark the 35th anniversary of Utah Opera, will feature five productions: Richard Strauss’ Salome; Salt Lake Acting Company resident playwright Kathleen Cahill’s Fatal Song; Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata; Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot; and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio.

Because of much needed renovation work at the Capitol Theatre, which will require the theatre to be closed from the end of June through the end of November, the first two productions will take place at other venues.

Soprano Marcy Stonikas will sing the title role in "Salome" in October

In October there will be a fully costumed production of Salome in Abravanel Hall. The concert hall setting will allow the one-act opera to be performed with the large orchestra the score requires.

Cahill’s Fatal Song, a witty take on what would happen if some of opera’s tragic heroines met to discuss why divas always must die in the end, will be presented in the Jeanné Wagner Theatre in the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in November. It will be performed “cabaret style,” with the audience sitting on the stage with the performers.

The other three productions will be performed in the Capitol Theatre.

Among the roster of singers coming to Utah Opera next season are sopranos Marcy Stonikas, who will sing the role of Salome, and Maida Hundeling, who will appear in the title role in Turandot.

Soprano Maida Hundeling will take on the title role in Puccini's "Turandot"

Stage director Renaud Doucet (Turandot) and conductor Stewart Robinson (Salome) will be making their Utah Opera debuts in the new season.

Season tickets go on sale Feb. 6 and can be purchased by calling 801-533-6683 or by visiting www.utahopera.org.
