As the jazz commission recipient, Patrick Buie will present the world premiere of Jura on June 27 at 8:30 p.m. on the Festival Stage. Jura is a small Scottish island where Buie’s ancestors lived and is home to a beautiful estate called Ardfin. The nature of the piece evokes a sense of Jura’s moodiness and beauty.

Buie is a long time member of the Salt Lake City music scene. He’s played guitar and bass guitar for several prominent rock groups and has co-written a pair of full length albums as a leading member of the popular local rock group Patter Stats. In 2007 Buie took up trombone and moved into jazz under Dr. Donn Schaefer’s mentoring and studied composition with Russell Schmidt at the University of Utah.

Robert Paterson, the classical music commission winner, will present the world premiere of Hell’s Kitchen, for mixed chamber ensemble, on June 28 at 4 p.m. in the Salt Lake City Public Library Auditorium. Hell’s Kitchen is the third work in what Paterson calls a gruesome series of compositions with references to apparitions and the underworld. The other two works in the series are Ghost Theater and Closet Full of Demons.

Paterson has written works for the Albany Symphony and the Vermont Symphony and Jaime Laredo; his music has also been played by the Louisville Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble and the New York New Music Ensemble, among others.

Also on the June 28 concert will be works by Mathew Rosenblum, Kamran Ince, Timothy Beyer and Brigham Young University composer Christian Asplund. Performing will be a select group of local musicians: Carlton Vickers, flute; Scott Harris, clarinet; Hasse Borup, violin; Cassie Olson, cello; Jeremy Megginson, percussion; and Jed Moss, piano. Andrew Rindfleisch will conduct.
