SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE ON TAP THIS WEEKEND

There is a variety of concerts on the horizon this weekend that offers something for every taste.

  • Today at 8 p.m., Azerbaijani guitarist Rovshan Mamedkuliev makes his Utah debut in a recital in All Saints Episcopal Church, 1710 Foothill Dr. The 27-year-old won the 2012 Guitar Foundation of America Competition and is a rising star in the world of classical guitar. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $5 for students with ID and are available at the door. For more information log on to www.ucgs.org.

  • Today and tomorrow at 8 p.m. the Utah Symphony welcomes guest Emmanuel Pahud to Abravanel Hall. The much sought after soloist and principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic will play three works: Elliott Carter’s Flute Concerto from 2008; Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major, K. 314; and a transcription of “Lenski’s Aria” from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin. The program, conducted by Thierry Fischer, also includes a suite from Richard Strauss’ opera Der Rosenkavalier and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.   • On Saturday, the University of Utah piano faculty will team up with the Paradigm Chamber Orchestra and conductor Joel Rosenberg. Performing will be pianists Ning Lu, Jeffrey Price and Larry Gee in J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Three Pianos in D minor; and Lenora Brown, Vedrana Subotic, Jie Lu and Susan Duehlmeier in J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Four Pianos in A minor. Also on the program is Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 in A major, K. 201; music from Schubert’s Rosamunde; and Max Bruch’s Romance for Viola and Orchestra, with Rosenberg conducting and playing viola.  The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Libby Gardner Concert Hall. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $6 for seniors, staff, faculty and non-U. students, and free for U. students.

  • The Gina Bachauer Concert Series opens its 2013-14 season Saturday with the return of Cedric Pescia, gold medalist at the 2002 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. He will be playing Beethoven’s last three sonatas: Nos. 30 in E major, op. 109; 31 in A flat major, op. 110; and 32 in C minor, op. 111. The recital takes place in the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $8 for students and available by calling 801-355-2787 or 888-451-2787 or logging on to www.arttix.org.
  • University of Utah pianist Larry Gee will be spotlighted at the Sundays@7 concert this Sunday at 7 p.m. He will play Ferruccio Busoni’s arrangement of J.S. Bach’s Chaconne in D minor; Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin; and Frédéric Chopin’s Sonata in B minor. The recital is free of charge.
  • Also on Sunday, organists Douglas Bush from Brigham Young University and Kenneth Udy from the University of Utah will play a joint recital as part of the Cathedral of the Madeleine’s Eccles Organ Festival. The concert starts at 8 p.m. and takes place in St. Mark’s Cathedral, 231 E. 100 South and is free of charge. (Please note the change of venue.) For more information log on to www.utcotm.org.
