CHRISTMAS WITH THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR, LDS Conference Center, Dec. 16; additional performance 8 p.m. Dec. 17, free but tickets required
The holidays wouldn’t be complete without the annual Christmas concerts by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the spacious confines of the LDS Conference Center. These concerts set the mood and capture the spirit of the season wonderfully.
Choir music director Mack Wilberg shared the podium with associate conductor Ryan Murphy. This year baritone Nathan Gunn and actress Jane Seymour joined the choir, the Orchestra at Temple Square and the Bells on Temple Square for a festive evening of Christmas music.
The choir sounded as fabulous as ever. They started things off with “Deck the Hall,” and continued with a wide variety of pieces. Among these were movements from Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Arthur Honegger’s King David.
Gunn brought his rich operatic baritone to a nice selection of works that included a delightful three-song set of popular Christmas songs: “Winter Wonderland,” “White Christmas” and “Let It Snow Let It Snow! Let t Snow!”
Seymour recounted the story of Good King Wenceslas and the Christmas Story from the Gospel of Luke with the choir singing in the background.
The three Tabernacle organists were also part of the concert, and Richard Elliott’s “Shepherd’s Dance,” in which he deftly combines several Christmas pieces in intricate counterpoint, was one of the highlights of the evening.
