JOEL ROSENBERG TO DO DOUBLE DUTY FRIDAY AS CONDUCTOR AND SOLOIST

Niccolò Paganini is remembered as one of the most remarkable virtuosos of the violin. But his musical interests also included the guitar and viola, for which he wrote several works.

Joel Rosenberg

Among his pieces that feature the viola is the Quartet No. 15 in C major, in which the first violin is replaced by viola. The work also includes a guitar part. Violist and conductor Joel Rosenberg has played the quartet in the past at his Paradigm series. A couple of years ago, violinist Kelly Richardson, a member of Rosenberg’s other group, the American West Symphony, took four of the quartet’s six movements and orchestrated them for solo viola and chamber orchestra.

Rosenberg will open the new Paradigm season Friday with Richardson’s arrangement of the quartet. “I played a part of it last year, but this will be the first time I’m doing the entire work,” Rosenberg told Reichel Recommends.

Rosenberg will also solo in another work, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat, K. 364, for violin and viola. Joining Rosenberg will be violinist Kelly Parkinson. “This is the first time Kelly and I will have played together in about seven years,” Rosenberg said. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Rounding out the concert is J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Two Pianos in C minor, BWV 1060, an arrangement of the Double Concerto in D minor for two violins. Soloists are Susan Duehlmeier and Bonnie Gritton.
