CELLIST MATT ZALKIND AND PIANIST HEATHER CONNER IN RECITAL

After an absence of a few years, the Congregation Kol Ami has revived its concert series, inviting a number of area musicians as well as guest artists to participate. The next concert, which takes place on Jan. 23, features cellist Matt Zalkind and pianist Heather Conner. They’ll be doing music from the Baroque to the 20th century. On the program is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Pezzo Capriccioso;” Lukas Foss, “Capriccio” and Johannes Brahms’ Sonata in F major. Zalkind will also play two works for solo cello, J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 4 and György Ligeti’s Sonata for Cello.

Zalkind is the son of Utah Symphony musicians Larry and Roberta Zalkind.



A seasoned competitor Matt Zalkind has participated in several international competitions over the years, including the Juilliard School Competition in 2009 where he took top prize.

A student of Timothy Eddy, Zalkind received his master’s degree at Juilliard last year. He is now pursuing his doctorate at the University of Michigan.

As a performer, Zalkind has appeared with the Utah Symphony and the Music Academy of the West Festival Orchestra in Santa Barbara, Calif. He has also taken part in a number of summer festivals, including Marlboro, Ravinia, Sarasota and Grand Teton.

Conner is on the piano faculty at the University of Utah. She has given numerous solo recitals in Salt Lake City and elsewhere in the United States as well as in Europe. In addition to her solo work, she is also an avid chamber musician.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. and takes place in Congregation Kol Ami, 2425 E. Heritage Way (2760 South). Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and available by phone at 801-484-1501 and online at conkolami.org.
