UTAH VALLEY SYMPHONY PROGRAM FOCUSES ON OPERA

Bryce Rytting and the Utah Valley Symphony will present an evening of operatic favorites, featuring several local singers, at their concerts this Wednesday and Thursday.

Jennifer Welch-Babidge

The program will spotlight soprano Jennifer Welch-Babidge and Darrell Babidge. Together, they will sing three pieces: “Bei Männern welche Liebe fühlen” and “Papagena, Papageno,” both from Mozart’s The Magic Flute and “La ci darem la mano” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

“Jennifer and I have performed these duets many times together, but they never get old for us,” Darrell Babidge wrote in an email to Reichel Recommends. “We like to improvise each time we perform them, so that hopefully there’s always a new energy there.”

Darrell Babidge

Joining the husband-and-wife duo will be Emily Nelson; Gretchen Windt; Melissa Heath; and Rebecca Pedersen, a student of Darrell Babidge and recent Metropolitan Opera Council winner.

Pedersen will sing the “Flower Duet from Delibes’ Lakmé with Welch-Babidge. Nelson, Windt and Heath will sing an extended section from Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier.

Isaac Hurtado is also on the program singing ”Una furtiva lagrima” from Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and “La donna è mobile” from Verdi’s Rigoletto.

Babidge will also sing “Hai già vinta la causa” from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro; and Welch-Babidge will sing “O mio babbino caro,” from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.

Rytting and the orchestra will play the overture from Verdi’s Nabucco; the March from Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges; and “Ombra mai fu” from Handel’s Serse.
