UTAH OPERA ANNOUNCES 2012-13 SEASON

Christopher McBeth, artistic director of Utah Opera, announced today the 2012-13 line up. Among the four operas are three audience favorites and a Utah premiere.

The three sure fire audience hits are Giuseppe Verdi’s dark Il Trovatore; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s magical Die Zauberflöte; and Gioachino Rossini’s effervescent comedy Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

Daniel Catán

The work receiving its Utah premiere is Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera Florencia en el Amazonas (Florencia in the Amazon). The opera is loosely based on Gabriel García Márquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera which Catán, who unexpectedly passed away last year at the age of 62, set to a lush and effusive score. Cynthia Clayton will sing the role of Florencia.

Complete cast, conductors and stage directors for each production will be announced at a later date.

Season tickets go on sale Jan. 31 and can be purchased by calling 801-533-6683 or online at www.utahopera.org. Seating is assigned on a first come first served basis. Current Utah Opera season subscribers will receive renewal forms by mail in early February.
