Brigham Young University’s school of music will present Hector Berlioz’s seldom performed opera Béatrice et Bénédict nightly from June 8-11 at 7:30 p.m. in de Jong Concert Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $6 and available either by calling 801-422-4322 or by going online at www.byuarts.com/tickets.
This is a wonderful opportunity to see one of Berlioz’s most lighthearted stage works. Berlioz was an amazingly prolific composer who wrote a considerable number of operas that unfortunately have either been neglected today or at the very least receive only an occasional performance.
Berlioz, who loved the plays of William Shakespeare, based Béatrice et Bénédict on Much Ado About Nothing. It recounts the tale of two bickering acquaintances who are tricked by friends into falling in love with each other. The dialogue will be in English with the vocal numbers sung in French.
The show is double cast. In the leads are Annalise Belnap and Jennifer McKay (Béatrice); Jubal Joslyn and Justin Call (Bénédict); and Shannon Fry and Laura Snow (Héro). Stage direction is by Arden Hopkin and the conductor is Auriela Joslyn.
